All I want for Christmas is a bed net.

While insecticide-treated bed nets are not on the top of many American’s holiday wish lists this season, there are nearly a million people around the world who without the gift of a life saving net will not survive to make it to the holiday season next year.

The statistics surrounding malaria deaths are staggering.

• “In Africa a child dies every 45 seconds of Malaria.”
• “In 2008, there were 247 million cases of malaria and nearly one million deaths” and
• Half of the world’s population is at risk.

The seriousness of this illness made more pronounced by these statistics is even more staggering when paired with the realization that this disease is both preventable and curable. While big money spenders like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation help to lead the charge towards making malaria eradication a reality, all indicators show that public support is absolutely critical in this pursuit.

Although the hustle and bustle of the holiday season offers plenty of distractions from the harsh realities in which people on our planet daily live, I would urge everyone to consider the possibility of taking a stand this holiday season and contribute in some way to help put an end to these devastating statistics.

Whether it is spending $10 to donate a bed net online.

Or ordering a funny t-shirt to help spread the word.

Make this holiday season special by making a difference in showing your support for malaria prevention and maybe save someone’s life while you’re at it! Happy holidays!
